11 Best Chemistry Apps for High School Students

In this post, I am sharing with you this interesting  collection of good educational iPad apps specifically curated from iTunes App Store for high school teachers and students. These are apps to help students with chemistry learning from understanding the elements, molecules and atoms to exploring chemical reactions. These chemistry apps provide high school students  with activities, video lessons, simulated experimentations,  periodic tables and several other materials and resources to boost their chemistry learning and engage them in deep and meaningful learning experiences.  1- The Elements by Theodore Gray ‘The Elements: A Visual Exploration is not just a reference app, it is a rich and engaging love story of the periodic table, told in words and pictures, and allowing you to experience the beauty and fascination of the building blocks of our universe in a way you've never seen before.’ 2- Chemistry by THIX ''Experiment with various lab equipment, procedures, and chemicals with complete freedom—no need to buy chemicals or clean up afterwards. Perfect for testing, exploring, learning, or just playing around...The 17 essential lab apparatuses are not only intuitively easy to use, but can also satisfy all your scientific demanding...180 built-in inorganic chemical reagents. 60+ organic chemicals. Covering the materials from kids science class up to college chemistry.'' 3- ChemCalc  ‘This is a convenient chemistry tool for students and professionals to calculate molecular mass (molecular weight) of compounds and learn basic properties of chemical elements on iPad.’ 4- Atom in a Box HD  ‘Rewritten from scratch for the iPad, Atom in a Box HD is an aid for visualizing the Hydrogen atomic orbitals, the three-dimensional states that the electron occupies in Hydrogen, a prime and otherwise unwieldy example of Quantum Mechanics. ’ 5- Chemistry Formulas Practice 'Chemistry Formulas Practice stimulates students’ mastery of the fundamental skill of naming compounds and writing formulas. The practice categories include ionic and molecular compounds, acids, bases, polyatomic ions, hydrocarbons, and organic functional groups. Students may choose their pace as they work from formula to name or name to formula.' 6- iSpartan ‘iSpartan is a versatile app for molecular modeling on the iPad, iPhone, and iPod Touch. The app allows any chemist fast and easy access to computational methods that have proven reliable for a large range of molecules.’ 7- Chemistry Formula Practice Free ‘Chemistry Formulas Practice stimulates students’ mastery of the fundamental skill of naming compounds and writing formulas. The practice categories include ionic and molecular compounds, acids, bases, polyatomic ions, hydrocarbons, and organic functional groups.’ 8- Coaster Physics 'Used by educators everywhere to bring motion Physics to life in the classroom, Coaster Physics is now optimized for iOS 8 and for the latest iPhones and iPads. What are the laws of Physics governing the motion of a roller coaster? How are speed and acceleration related? How does the g-force change at different points along the track? Design and ride your very own realistic roller coaster, and see how quantities like speed, acceleration, energy and g-force change as you ride along the track.' 9- Chem101 'The app features a custom-built tool that allows students and instructors to quickly and intuitively draw Lewis structures on mobile devices. Additionally, both students and instructors have access to over 250 built-in questions related to Lewis structures, resonance, molecular geometries, VSEPR, hybridization, sigma and pi bonding, and molecular polarity.' 10- Organic Reactions 'The application is organized to provide a direct link between a reactant and its corresponding product, as well as the synthesis and protection reactions. To enable a regular updating and to support this work, some of the functions, and a list of reactions sorted by name requires an additional purchase.' 11- ReactionFlash 'Designed and developed in consultation with Professor Dr. Erick M. Carreira of ETH Zürich, the app covers over 1'000 named chemistry reactions. Professor Carreira has helped ensure that we have all the fundamental reactions that should be part of every chemist’s toolkit: from the best-known ones to the ones only Nobel Prize winners remember!'This post originally appeared in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning ( www.educatorstechnology.com ).

Ptable- An Interactive Periodic Table for Teachers and Students

Ptable is an interactive periodic table that works on both desktop and mobile device. Chemical elements on Ptable are organized by atomic number, properties, and electron configuration. Each element on this periodic table is outsourced to Wikipedia for more information.  Some of the cool features provided by Ptable include a Time machine which allows users to go back in time and explore the elements discovered during that year.  An Isotope view which once chosen overlays selected or all known isotopes for a given element. A compound tab that provides information regarding the possible compounds elements form, and many more. Ptable also provides "complete orbital readout for each element's ground state, quantum numbers, oxidation states, and diagram following Hund's rules. Hover over each electron pair for a 3-D view of that orbital that you can drag to rotate or hover over the element to view its highest occupied atomic orbital.".  As for the structure of the data, u...

Random Group Generators for Teachers

Looking for some good group generators to use with your students in class? The list below has you covered. It features some of the best random group maker tools out there. No sign-up is required to start using these tools. The process is simple and easy: type students names and click on spin to let the wheel select random names to use to create various groups in class.  Random group maker tools (as is the case with name pickers) are especially helpful in group work activities where students work together to create optimal learning experiences. Group work is an essential part of the learning process.  Through distributed efforts students get to develop the social skills of empathy, collaboration, and coordination. Technology has made it even easier for teachers and educators to boost collaborative teamwork and cultivate social emotional learning. 1- Random Group Generator Random Group Generator by  Classtools is an example of an EdTech tool designed specifically to help teachers t...
